Chapter 45
Chapter 47 - Characterisation of Richard Parker
Intertextuality - the relationship between (literary) texts.
Images that are constantly repeated across texts can help to develop a widely accepted image or idea about a subject.
Eg. Sharks in Jaws / Deep Blue Sea; Princesses in Disney films
Sometimes this images are accurate, other times they are not.
Listen to the following poem, The Tyger, by William Blake, and make connections between Richard Parker and image of the tiger in the poem. Then read the words and see how accurate your ideas were.
What impression of the tiger is given in both texts?
Read chapter 48 - what does this recount tell us about Richard Parker? How does the writer establish him as a 'unique' animal.
Read this analysis of Richard Parker.
Create a detailed mind map illustrating the character of Richard Parker. Use the following categories to explore the complexities of his character.
* Physical appearance
* Actions
* Similarities to Pi
* Differences to Pi
* Human aspects
* Animal instinct
* Survival techniques
- How does Martel achieve a tone change in this chapter?

How will this be shown?
Individually, students will produce an iMovie analysis of the scene, discussing (in real time) what is happening.
Instructions
Reading
- 56 - In your book, summaries the concept being discussed and what Pi teaches the reader about it.
- 57 - Underline RP's actions (eg. He was looking at me intently). Consider his noises and movements. What impression is given of the animal and how does Pi feel about him?
- 71 & 72 - How does Pi intend to 'train' RP? Where has he learned these skills from?
Learning
We will not be spending time learning the details of camera angle but you will need to know the basics.
- Read about camera angles here.
Watching and applying
- Go to videoNot.es and connect using your school google drive.
- Using this site, connect to the video https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aee2cbOh5kk.
- Watch the video and in the box on the right, comment on what is happening, making reference to the camera angles. (The good thing about this site is that it links your comments to the time in the video that they are happening. This will help you to be more organised)
Discussing
- With a peer, discuss the importance of this scene. What ideas from the book is it trying to communicate and how does the director use film techniques to do this?
- How are the characters, and their relationship, illustrated in this scene?
- How does Pi feel at the end of the scene? How do the viewers know this?
- How does each character attempt to demonstrate their power in this scene?
Creating
- Once you think you have a good understanding of the scene, in pairs, create an iMovie analysing the scene. You can either embed the video in the corner and talk about it in real time, or you can discuss and insert frames as they are relevant.
- Your iMovie should also have a brief introduction explaining the importance of the scene and why it has been included, as well as a conclusion summarising what has been learnt.
- Upload this video to YouTube and send a link to Ms Crowden by Wednesday 16th April.
